Johnny Cash

Today, there was an article on the Yahoo homepage about Johnny Cash. It basically said that he reached more popularity after his death in 2003 than he did when he was alive. Only two of his albums made top 10 when he was alive and three made the top 10 after he died. The writer of the article attributes this to the under-representation of country music on the music charts during Cash's lifetime. It is also interesting that the first two albums reached top 10 in 1969 and 1970, while the other albums reached top 10 in 2005, 2006, and just this week. The movie Walk the Line was released in 2005, which may be why there was such a growing interest in Johnny Cash again. I think that the movie opened up a new audience to Johnny Cash not only because of his musical ability, but also because of his story which is heart-breaking and fascinating. It is funny to see Johnny Cash's album in the same Billboard chart as Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, and Susan Boyle. The article also includes other artists who reached more popularity after their deaths, such as Kurt Cobain and 2Pac.
