I disagree with the notion that Elvis is the "King of Rock n' Roll," he did not create the new sound or even write his own music, he was just a great performer. I had learned that the reason Sam Phillips liked Elvis so much was because he was a white singer but had the sound of a black artist and that was exactly what Phillips was looking for. When people first heard Elvis on the radio they thought he was black but I guess when white people found out he was white it made him acceptable to listen to. I think that for the most part Elvis was what his record company wanted him to be. There is no question about his talent as a performer and his charisma is mesmerizing but I do not think he is worthy of the title "King."

Another point on being the "King of Rock n' Roll," Elvis has seemed to always have a grip on this title but when Micheal Jackson died, the "King of Pop," Kanye West claimed that he was the new "King of Pop." Does the notion of once a king always a king stand or do you think that one day a new king will be crowned in the Rock n' Roll world?

  1. Good questions Catherine. Thomas made some interesting comments in response to your post. I think whats important here in the disseminatin of titles such as the King of Pop and the King of Rock 'n' Roll is how much they permeated into mainstream popular culture-especially with Elvis. I have a hard time believing that people will jump to considering Kanye West the new "King of Pop"-but hey, I could be wrong.
