Kanye- the king of self-appreciation

Cath asked if a new king of Rock and Roll could be crowned. If by "new" you mean a current artist, then no, because the era of "rock and roll" is over and gone. "King of Pop" is different, cause pop just means popular music. All the crap music played on Kiss is "pop," so there could possibly be a new king of pop. Youll only hear "rock and roll" on oldies stations, so if a new "king of rock and roll" were crowned, it would have to go to someone else from the era. Now we could have a new "king of rock" because current artists would be involved.
And Kanye cannot bestow that title upon himself, in my eyes. A compliment is only worth something when it is given by somebody else. A self-given compliment is worthless, as is Kanye. Don't tell me how spectacular you are. Let me decide that for myself.

  1. Thomas you raise interesting points about titles-which we've talked about several times in class. Remember our discussion of Paul Whiteman-who coined himself the King of Jazz, and Benny Goodman, whose drummer nicknamed him the King of Swing-do you believe that they deserved these titles, and how problematic do you find it that they or someone close to them gave them these titles? And as far as Michael Jackson goes, because he is considered the King of Pop, and you say that "pop just means popular music"-does that mean you don't feel he is worthy of the title or that pop music is not as meaningful as other genres? I'm simply playing devil's advocate here-I'd like to see you expand some of these ideas.
