Well today has been fun. Our discussion yesterday was very interesting. I feel like because the topic is something more relevant to our lives we talked about it more because we have had time to form an opinion about it our whole lives. The experience of it makes it more interesting. But anyway... i feel that (like i stated in class) Stereotypes are a little over exaggerated but there is some truth in them also. Only a select handful of people (mostly the rappers making the videos) have TONS of money to have big cars and big chains and all that but some people actually do in real life and that's how they live. I've seen some pimped out cars drive down my road.
But the main thing that doesn't make sense to me in the rap culture is the use of the word "nigga". Not only is it a nasty word but the excessive use of it it ridiculous. It is a derogatory term that was said to bring African Americans down and yet African Americans use it ALL THE TIME. It just doesn't make sense. Why would you use a word that was used during the times of slavery to put your race down?
