Response to "The Transcontinental Disability Choir" Article

I personally fell in love with Glee after the first episode. This was something fresh, aside from the cheesy High School Musical. I guess I got too caught up watching these people portray as high school kids performing a beautiful musical and its humor in every episode. I wasn't paying much attention in the concepts, themes, and messages they were trying to convey to viewers. However, after reading this article, the author has a point in how the show did not really succeed in portraying gays, Blacks, minorities, and especially people with disabilities. Being in a wheelchair dancing around does not offer comfort to the people who are really disabled because one, the cast in there aren't really disabled, two this whole musical performed in "wheels" just didn't seem realistic. Like Smith pointed out "Hiring an actress with Down Syndrome for a single throwaway guest role is not including actors with disabilities" nor is it showing any acceptance for the handicapped. But then again, some people can argue that this is just a T.V. show where producers simply want to entertain us watchers. Overall, the main message behind the "Wheels" episode failed to produce positive responses from the portion of the audience with disabilities if they were watching.
