Before I learned about Woody Guthrie and folk music. I thought folk music is country music, because the rhythm is very similar to country music. Even though, folk music and country music are similar each other and share same root of the style, but message is different. Country music is more about personal expression, but folk music reflects social issues. Folk music was very popular among workers, because I think folk musician expressed social injustice instead of many American workers. So many people sympathized about songs and became popular. Woody Guthrie was the one who popularized folk music in 1930s~50s and affected later folk music. I think the situation in that period, people's preference, and message of music made synergy effect on popularity of Woody Guthrie's music. That's why the folk music gained tremendous popularity.
