Disability part 2
So I was thinking about those outlandish picture of Lady Gaga's and thought maybe she was aiming for something in those pictures. Maybe not something as far as "the disabled person" but maybe she was using it all in a metaphorical sense. Well as far as the Liberace-esque wheelchair picture. . . perhaps she meant for the wheelchair to symbolize Hollywood (hence another explanation for the glitz and glamour) and her falling out of it to symbolize her breaking free of the constraint of Hollywood. Of course that hypothesis doesn't really follow through for the other pictures. . . because the Hindenburg picture shows her in the crutches. . . which would make her part of the Hollywood "handicap" thus destroying my theory. But the Hollywood norm thing brings about my next point. . . someone in class yesterday mentioned about how there is a lack of handicapped people in Hollywood. That's very true, it also ties in with the society perception of people. Hollywood has been known for it's "beautiful" people as has the entertainment industry period. It's a superficial business used for marketing peoples feelings. There are probably many talented disabled actors out there but perhaps many of them feel like they can't break out into the acting industry because they don't fit that Hollywood mode. Crip drag doesn't help either, why put yourself out there for a role when they're just going to have Julia Roberts plop in a wheelchair and get the role? I think in order to get the disabled actors into cinema and television, you'd have to eradicate crip drag and make an open invitation (meant more metaphorically then literally) to disabled actors or disabled people wishing to be actors. Even better try casting them in roles where the persons role isn't just to be the disabled person. Imagine The Notebook, but with actors in wheelchairs where the story focused on their emotions, not the issues they have due to the fact they are wheelchair bound. I have pretty strong feeling that's never going to happen. . . but it's a thought yeah?
