Urban America has left the “hood” and moved the homes of suburbia and the rest of the world in the form of hip-hop. Hip-Hop is now the most popular genre in the United States. This is evident from Nike’s commercial which features puppet Kobe Bryant rapping and as well as puppet Santa rapping a Christmas jingle. Also hip-hop domination is seen on the Billboards hot 100 songs, which features 11 hip-hop songs in the top 25. Even with the presence of rap music and hip-hop culture everywhere, the genre is still being unfairly targeted. Racism?
Racism is a word that is more used than a public restroom in Times Square. As a result I am very hesitant to bring racism up. But it was the words that popped in my head when watching the Grammy performance of Lil Wayne, Drake & Eminem. During the performance over half Lil Wayne, Drake & Eminem’s verses were censored. At first I thought there was something wrong with my TV because the pauses were so long. The Grammy were embarrassing to say the least this year and it was even more embarrassing to ruin the best performance of the night with censors. The rappers did not even curse! I am disgusted that even with the worldwide acceptance of hip-hop, the Grammy’s did not allow to properly rap showcase itself.
