I had never heard of the term Tin Pan Alley. I also had never heard of most of the Tin Pan Alley songs. From the lecture as well as the readings I have a greater appreciation for Tin Pan Alley. Part of the reason for this is because even though the Great Depression hit America, Tin Pan Alley musicians did not write about it. I truly believe that when your in a bad mood you shouldn't listen to music that reminds you of the mood. For example when you and your boyfriend/girlfriend break up, it seems like the dumbest thing to listen to love songs. Instead of reminding everyone how bad things were, Tin Pan Alley songs tried to take the people away from the Depression and into a time where things were great.
I might be jumping the gun, but I see a lot of parallels between today's R&B and Tin Pan Alley songs. Though most current R&B songs will never become standards, they evoke the same kind of emotions as Tin Pan Alley. Both genres created a sense of togetherness, love, friendship, and a slue of other warm and fuzzy feelings.
