Ray

I really enjoyed the few clips of Ray that we saw in class. I have always been fascinated with Ray Charles but I honestly never knew much about his life or background. From the brief parts that we saw, it seemed like being blind wasn't the only thing he struggled with. Ray was tormented by visions of his drowning brother, fought through the music business, and was cheated out of a lot of things. This was interesting to me because when anyone talks about Ray Charles, the emphasis is always placed on the fact that he was blind. This obviously played a huge role in his life, but from the clips we saw, it seemed like his disability was really the least of his issues. This shows how people can focus so much on a person's disability and believe that having a disability is really the only thing that person has to deal with. The movie shed light on a lot of problems surrounding Ray Charles and didn't completely focus on the fact that he was blind. Movies can do positive things, like discuss a person's life and background, and talk about other important things that may or may not be known to audiences. Just by watching the few scenes in class, I have a new respect for Ray Charles and his ability to overcome his struggles to become one of the greatest musicians.
