Not to be a negative nancy, but...

...am I the only one who was kind of disappointed to find out that in a course titled "Musics of the World," I would be learning absolutely nothing regarding musics of the world? Although I do believe that i will still enjoy the class, I was, in fact, hoping to learn something about the music of other cultures. I was hoping to maybe learn about the music of the far-eastern countries, of latin and Russian and European musical styles. I was really hoping for some tribal music as well. I wouldve even expected a class dealing with how american music has been influenced by the different musics from around the world, or vice versa, maybe even how the world has been influenced by american artists. I definately did not expect a course dealing strictly with the history of American popular music during the last century and a half. I guess i should have taken the "American Studies" part into more consideration than the "Musics of the World" part. That said, I'm still expecting to enjoy and learn alot in this class.

  1. Sorry to dissapoint Thomas-I thought I was clear from the beginning that the course was basically 20th century American music history, with an international flare. The department assigned me the course title because it fit, not because it was necessarily pertinent. I do know that the music department offers a world musics course-I don't know the professor who teaches it but I have heard really good things about the course. Perhaps that might be more of what you're looking for. I'm trying my best to include diverse musical traditions-if there is something in particular that you would like me to discuss please feel free to bring it up.

  2. I'm in that World Music course right now. It's Music 264, and the entire course is about Brazilian music (which draws it's influences from all over the world). The teacher is Felipe Ribeiro, and he's awesome. I'd definitely recommend the course if he teaches it again.
