Glee Response
I'm not really a big fan of the show Glee because it has always reminded me of those high school musical movies. But i have to admit (even not being a fan of Glee) that I didn't find the "Wheels" episode to be offensive or controversial. Of course that's easy for me to say being that I'm not disabled. I just think that it is important to remember that the kid playing the boy in the wheel chair in that episode of Glee is an actor, that is his job, and that is what he gets paid to do no matter what the role is. Maybe they couldn't get a person that is disabled to play the part in the first place? There wasn't a huge controversy over Dustin Hoffman playing the role of Rain Man and he doesn't have autism. I think that the episode shed some light on people who have disabilities which is more than what most t.v. shows do. Yea, maybe the show didn't portray people having disabilities accurately due to the fact that the actor playing the boy in the wheel chair isn't disabled himself, but I think it was good that they tried to show the life of a disabled person. I think the episode deserves a little better credit than its getting.
