Classic Blues Singers
In the Brackett article # 6 a poet by the name of Leri Jones talks about Blues and the Blues people. He mentions that the country blues was full of male singers and the newer classic blues was full of female singers. The reason for this was that the country blues were mainly about living the life of a wanderer and women during this time were not wanderers unless they were following after their man. The classic blues was mainly about sadness and this gave women an opportunity to join in on the blues. Jones also mentioned that at this time African Ameican women were limited in their career choices, because the only fields open to African American women during this time period was church, domestic work, and prostitution. The classic blues music was meant to be an escape from all the sadness, and limitations these people felt during this time but for many artists, the industry added more sorrow with all of its drugs, discrimination, lack of credit and lack of proper income.
