I think giving the title 'king of pop' to Michael Jackson has been an important step towards racial cohesion in America. Since Michael Jackson was the first black artist recognized for his influence in a genre that’s for all races, it meant a great deal that a black musician was given the title.
I believe he deserves the title; there is just no one better and more entertaining in the pop world than Michael Jackson. I can’t stereotype all white critics who disagree to Michael Jackson’s significance in the music world for being racists, but after reading Tate’s article I can’t help but think that way. It gives me the feeling that no matter how brilliant Michael Jackson gets, they would still think nothing is good enough. I feel like white critics just don't like the fact that a black artist is that important, there is always that racist mindset.
I personally think it is unfair to say that a certain album is a racial sell out or flop because I am pretty sure there will be people who can connect to the songs that Tate called as sell out, on a personal level and love them.
