Masculinity and Hip-Hop
Society emphasizes masculinity and its responsibility in gender roles. Studies show that most young men describe masculinity with words such as tough, strong, independent, and resourceful. This “real man” image is seen throughout almost every ethnic group around the world. Many of these young men learn this ideal image from their family or their surrounding community. Studies continue to show, however, that the power of the media is the most influential networking system for young adults. Many men and woman believe the gender roles that are portrayed in the media are the ideal roles. That is why hip-hop is so intertwined with masculinity. Young guys look up to these rappers who portray masculinity as they perceive. It turns into a vicious cycle after awhile.
