Music as a selling point
I took a psych class year about the psychology of music and found one of the studies to be very interesting. I can't remember the name of the study or who it was by, but it was about the affects that music has on purchasing things. The study took place in a winery or a liquor store and depending on what kind of music was playing had an impact on the type of wine that customers were buying at the time. If german music was playing in the background than customers were swayed to buy german wine over a french style of wine more often than not. As expected, if french music was played in the background more french branded wine was purchased over german wine. I thought it was really interesting to see that music could have that much of an impact on people's purchasing choices. The study also claimed that it is better to have slower paced music playing in a store over faster paced music because when faster music was played the customers felt more rushed to look and left the store sooner. When the slower paced music was played customers took a longer time to look around in the store. So I guess this goes to show that style of music and the type of music will influence how long customers will stay and shop around as well as influence what they may purchase.
