One of the things that strikes me when thinking about the British Invasion and the Jimi Hendrix Experience is that racial tensions were so bad in the United States at this time that Jimi had to go to England and make people in the United States believe that he was from England and part of the British Invasion in order to gain recognition as a musician. He was actually from Washington, I believe Seattle. It was quite a shame that in order to be a successful black musician, he had to pass as something else.
Jimi would practice for hours every day to play as well as he did. The problem with "musicians" today is that they expect they can pick it up faster, hardly practice and expect to play amazing shows. I was not aware of this until someone pointed it out to me and I hardly believed it at first until I looked at the kids who are now playing battle of the bands who spend hours upon hours making their band's myspace layout look nice, but they can't actually play their instruments. I think this is one of the major differences about kids who play music today, a lot of them don't have motivation. Probably because many great musicians have already came out and spent their whole lives perfecting their instruments. Of course, I'm not saying that all people who play instruments suck -- just many kids today think they can play without practicing, which is obviously not the case. I played clarinet in middle school and I lost interest fast so I dropped out of band in 8th grade. I didn't improve because I never practiced. I think this is the way people think today as well.
