The first people to play electric guitar still played it like an acoustic; different open chords and barr chords. Most modern electric guitarists use different scales at much faster tempos over this acoustic style playing to create harmony and a deeper sound to the music than just having a bass in the background. In the 60's and 70's, bands such as Led Zeppelin would use as many as 7 electric guitars in their music, giving it a completely genuine sound. This was only a decade or so after electric guitar starting gaining spotlight! I think that it is going to be interesting to see how the guitarists and also the technology associated with electric guitar is going to develop in the future.
