British Invasion!
I love the British Invasion bands. Love love love! Both the first and the second. Yes I love The Stones, The Beatles, and The Who. But, my favourite is either Hermans Hermits or The Animals. House of the Rising Sun and Sky Pilot are a great songs! The lead singer, Eric Burdon, is often mistaken for Mick Jagger (Don't ask me how) but his bluesy voice was perfect for their songs. Hermans Hermit's did great tracks as well!! They were underrated as far as musically but as far as commercial appeal, they were right up there with The Stones and Beatles. "No Milk Today" and "I'm Henry the 8th, I am" are probably my top two out of this band. The Second British Invasion procured equally UH-mazing bands. New Wave? Love it. Gary Numan? Love him! Duran Duran? Who DOESN'T love Duran Duran? Some even consider Pulp one of the last of the Second Invasion bands and how can one not love Jarvis Cocker twirling about on stage to "Disco 2000" and "Do you remember the first time?" Some of the greatest bands in history hail from these invasion. Not just The Beatles, Stones, and The Who. They are all great bands and I love them, but the invasions have SO much to offer!I honestly think there could be a whole class on the British Invasions just covering the impact of those bands. Sadly not all British bands take off in the States even though they are talented. The prime example of that would be the Ska band Madness. They had a hit over here with "Our House" Then failed to capture the love of yank audiences. They had a ton of hits over in the UK with their quirky behaviour and unique song. As I'm writing this I'm listening to "Baggy Trousers" Great song and funny video. Another band, talented and despite their short lived career (Marc Boland died in a car crash in '77 at the peak of their career) was the band T.Rex. They pioneered Glam rock, a genre that continued on with Gary Glitter and David Bowie. Both artists laude T.Rex as the original glam rock band. I believe T.Rex had like. . . one major hit over here. "Get it on (Bang a Gong)", I recently found out, is on Rock Band. Without Marc Bolan and T.Rex, David Bowie might just have been a man in suit, never knowing Ziggy Stardust, and Gary Glitter might just have been a paedophile with a voice. Why these two bands never took off here like they did in the UK I don't know. But I love them anyway.
