Rock and Roll and Blues

I was wondering how blues came to influence rock and roll so much. Was it the themes of the lyrics or the style of music that had a larger influence on Rock and Roll. It seems that both played a large part in the creation of rock. So many rock artists revived old blues songs, playing them in a more upbeat way. A lot of times the rock version became much more successful and well known than the original blues version.
