The piano is one instrument that almost everybody has fooled around on or has some familiarity with. The sound is not hard to recognize and with eighty-eight keys on the intstrument, it is one of the most versatile instruments ever made. The release of the player-piano increased this versatility by allowing the piano to play the sheet music that you provide for it.
The piano is also one of the most helpful tools in learning music theory and music in general. A piano is a string instrument, so that means that it is played "as written" so no transposing is necessary when handed a piece of written music. The piano can play every key signature. The white keys are natural and the blacks are for accidentals (sharps and flats) which allows a visual aid for staying in key. While learning beginner-level music theory, it is easier to recognize intervals because of the black and white keys, too. Overall, the piano has a very genuine sound and is the best tool for learners of music.
