Hip-Hop A Mockery?
I left class today mad because of the ignorance towards hip-hop. I greatly appreciate our guest chiming in our discussion but he was wrong. Hip-Hop is not a mockery of what it used to be. Actually hip-hop is better than it has ever been with new artist like Wale, Drake, B.o.B., KiD CuDi and J. Cole coming into the game. They have taken hip-hop back to lyrics while creating a new sound, which mixes singing and rapping. Also these artists have broadened hip-hop fan base because of their individual backgrounds. Wale is the first artist from DC to make it mainstream, Drake is from Canada, B.o.B is an ATLien preppy kid, KiD CuDi is a hipster and J. Cole graduated from college (St. Johns University in Queen, NY). My point is none of these artists are “gangsters” or “thugs” and none of them portray themselves as that. They rap about the experiences they have experienced, whether its love affairs, finding acceptance, label problems or becoming famous. They are a breath of fresh air to rap. I challenge you all to listen to any of the artist I mention and ask yourself is hip-hop a mockery of what is used to be.
