Grammys
I watched about an hour of the Grammys on Sunday, and couldn't help but thinking there needs to be serious changes. In the best new artist category they had both MGMT and the Silversun Pickups; MGMT released their album in 2007 and pickups' debut album was released in 2006. How can they be considered new artists? It seems like the artists have to have success before being nominated. Instead of voting for the best records or whatever of the year, the voting is based on the best successful records of the year which is how you end up with mediocre acts such as the black eyed peas getting multiple nominations. Another gripe I have is that once an act becomes notorious for being "good" then they can mail it in and still get a grammy. I love U2, but do they really deserve 22 Grammys?... especially considering they peaked 18 years ago. I think that the fundamental problem is that there's such a wide range of music that is honored and it's difficult to expect the voters to get it right when they have to pick the best contemporary jazz album as well as the best rap album and best hard rock song. It's difficult to believe that a group of voters are well versed in all these different genres to make correct choices year after year.
